This Labor Day weekend Emily and I packed her car plump full and headed out to Nebraska to see friends and kite and camp at Lake McCounaghy near Ogallala, NE.  You wouldn't think Nebraska would be a great kite destination, but you would be wrong.  While we were there our friends from Colorado were there and we even met a kiter from Missouri.  Huge white sandy beaches and wide open spaces make it great place to travel to.

We left early Friday morning to make the 12 hour drive to Lake Mac.  After we arrived we set up our tent and headed down to the water front to visit with friends.  At Lake Mac locals will pull campers down right next to the water's edge with tractors to have a prime spot.  You can wake up, look out at the water and if it's windy, walk out your front door to your gear and ride.  We spent friday night catching up with friends and enjoying a campfire on the beach.

Saturday we woke up to light winds so the girls convinced Emily to a quick pilates/yoga session on the beach.  The men tried as well although it seemed to be much more difficult for us.

Although the wind was on the lighter side both days we were there, it was enough to get out and ride.  About 12-18 mph was good enough for all of us to get our gear on and play all day in the sun. Here's a good pic of Emily riding with the big boys on an evening session.

Monday morning we packed up and said goodbye to all of our Lake Mac friends.  I wish it was closer because once a year just isn't enough time to spend at such a great place with such a great group of people.  Check out a shot of the campsite we had and the beaches you'll find at Lake Mac.

If you get inspired to take a quick trip to Lake Mac, pack up your stuff today and head there this weekend for the Toucan Open.  It's a windsurfing event and every year the kiters hold The Strapless Open.  It's always the weekend after labor day and a cool event involving crossing the lake on a strapless board of your choice.  The winner gets a sweet belt buckle prize that rotates between the winners every year.  Go get your chance to wear the trophy for a year!  Emily and I always have a great time there and look forward to heading back next year.  While you're there, check out The Kite Ranch www.thekiteranch.com  Bob and Billie are great people who run a great shop and great representives of the type of people you'll meet at Lake Mac.
